Bag iStrap: Keeping Your Luggage on Track

A Bluetooth luggage tracker designed by Ryan Yeung & Hoi Yang

One of the worst nightmares for travelers is waiting anxiously at the airport terminal, unsure if their luggage will arrive on the conveyor belt. In response to this common concern, designers Ryan Yeung and Hoi Yang have created Bag iStrap, a Bluetooth wireless connected device that aims to revolutionize the way we track our luggage.

Bag iStrap is a compact and innovative solution to the age-old problem of lost or stolen luggage. By simply attaching the device to your luggage, you can receive real-time notifications on your mobile application when your luggage arrives. This not only saves you from the anxiety of waiting, but also ensures that you never miss your luggage again.

What sets Bag iStrap apart from other luggage trackers is its unique technology that allows for information sharing with others, such as airport staff. In the unfortunate event that your luggage is lost, the device can be used to aid in the search and recovery process. This collaborative approach ensures a higher chance of reclaiming your belongings.

One of the standout features of Bag iStrap is its strap-like design. Unlike most existing trackers, Bag iStrap allows you to keep your favorite luggage tag intact while still benefiting from its tracking capabilities. This attention to detail and user experience sets Bag iStrap apart from its competitors.

Bag iStrap utilizes Bluetooth low energy 4.0 technology, with a detection range of up to 40 meters in a free field. Powered by a thin cell battery CR2016, the device weighs a mere 8g, making it lightweight and unobtrusive. The advanced electronics inside the device are designed to recognize when the traveler is using their luggage, ensuring accurate tracking and notifications.

With dimensions of 30mm width, 200mm depth, and 7mm height, Bag iStrap is designed to be sleek and inconspicuous. Its minimalist design seamlessly integrates with any luggage, without compromising on functionality.

Bag iStrap is operated through a dedicated mobile application, available for both iPhone and Android devices. The app provides detailed information about your luggage, including a photo and owner details. Through instant messaging, the app and Bag iStrap work together to provide real-time updates on your luggage's whereabouts, whether it's on the conveyor belt or in the unfortunate event of theft or loss.

The development and design of Bag iStrap took place in Hong Kong, with the project starting in December 2015. Mass production is set to begin in summer 2016, ensuring that travelers worldwide can benefit from this innovative solution.

Bag iStrap was born out of extensive research into the issue of mishandled bags in the travel industry. According to WorldTracer data from SITA in 2015, there were 23.1 million mishandled bags, costing the industry a staggering USD 2.3 billion. This research highlighted the need for an affordable and battery-saving luggage tracker, which Bag iStrap aims to fulfill.

The design process for Bag iStrap was not without its challenges. The designers wanted to create a device that was both petite and modern, while also allowing users to preserve their favorite luggage tag. Through market research, they discovered that most existing products did not accommodate an additional tag. This led to the strap-like design of Bag iStrap, which offers users the best of both worlds.

Bag iStrap has already received recognition for its innovative design. It was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Fashion and Travel Accessories Design category in 2017. This prestigious award is bestowed upon designs that exhibit exceptional creativity, technical skill, and contribute to improving the quality of life.

With Bag iStrap, travelers can bid farewell to the stress and uncertainty of lost luggage. This Bluetooth luggage tracker offers a reliable and user-friendly solution that ensures your belongings are always within reach. Say goodbye to waiting at the conveyor belt and hello to a hassle-free travel experience.
